Sometime later Robin rolled off his mattress and pulled his work pants back on. Evelyn was dozing underneath his doona with one slender ankle poking out.

Amazing. I could get used to this. He was pleasantly woozy from the booze and weed and sex. But I won’t. Because she’s leaving.

He saw that she was watching him watching her and smiled, swooping back in for a kiss. She was bed warm and bed fuzzy.

“I gotta go pee,” he whispered in his best Forrest Gump voice.

She snorted. “Oh god me too. Take me with you?”

“Of course, m’lady.”

While she fished around for her underwear, Robin poured a fresh rum and coke – more coke than rum, this time – and drained half of it in a gulp.

“Which way? It’s so quiet up here.” She stood next to him and his mouth was suddenly dry again.

In the muted light of the bunker, dressed only in her underwear, hair hanging loose around her shoulders… she’s pure Hollywood. He shook his head in wonder, drinking in the sight of her.

She frowned. “What?”

He laughed and pulled her on to his lap. “You… are fucking gorgeous.” He kissed her and she pulled him tight. “You’ll be on a poster up here one day. Launceston’s Rita Heyworth.”

She rolled her eyes and pulled away. “And you’ll have a wet knee if you don’t show me where this toilet is.”

They left the bunker and walked down the cemented steps to the top booth. Evelyn used the little bathroom at the far end of the booth – “There’s a shower in here!” – while Robin fussed in the kitchenette. He opened a bag of Doritos and some basil dip, arranging them on one of the old wooden trays he used to carry food up to his bunker.

Evelyn came out of the bathroom looking somehow fresher and more arranged despite the fact she was still in her underwear.

“Oh this looks good,” she said, pressing into him.

“It’s not the only thing.”

“Should we take it up to the…”

A scream, a woman’s scream, loud and terrified. It sliced through the darkness, piercing the quiet of the cinema.

Robin’s blood ran cold. Evelyn clutched at him.

Another scream came, even louder, gratingly loud, too loud.

Evelyn clapped her hands to her ears, her eyes horrified. “Diana!”

“The foyer, come on!” Robin took her by the wrist. He glanced up at the sensor panel as they ran towards the door - the Foyer and Cinema Three lights were blinking steadily. All the others were dark.

Another scream, guttural and despairing, made Robin wince as he led Evelyn down the cement stairs. They dashed through the storeroom and into the foyer, looking around wildly. Nothing moved, not even the posters hanging from the foyer ceiling.

“Diana!” Evelyn yelped. “Diana, where are you?”

“They must have gone into one of the cinemas,” Robin muttered.

“Diana! Steven!”

“Should I call the…”

The Cinema Three doors creaked.

Robin and Evelyn spun to watch them slowly swing open – and Diana’s face popped out, her hair mussed, her cheeks flushed, and her eyes bright.

“What’s going on,” she blinked.
